Bruce Bingham’s Flicka-20 – s/v Sabrina

Sabrina was christened in Oyster Bay, New York in August 1978. Almost 200 people showed up including the press. It was huge. I thought you would like the illustration.

The Invitation Sketch For The Christening

These photos show Sabrina’s sail inventory used in the Round Long Island Race only two weeks after taking delivery of the boat in Oyster Bay, New York.  We did not race with the dinghy in tow.
The race was over 150 miles long, from Port Washington Long Island, completely around Long Island, and finishing at Port Washington.
We flew a real spinnaker from the start at 1800 in the evening, through the night (when we had caught up to boats over 30-footers) and doused the chute at about 0300 just east of Islip when we put of Sabrina’s balloon reacher (in photos).
We finished first in Cruising Class and forth or fifth overall in a fleet of over 80 starters.  We were the smallest boat ever to participate in this race.  In the following years they restricted the size of boats to 24 LOD and larger.

And here is an illustration of three of my designs in one frame: Saga, a 35-foot Fantasia cutter, Sabrina, my Flicka, and the Trinka 8 dinghy on Saga’s davits.
